Post-doctoral position available at Université Paris Est Créteil: Atmospheric reactivity of multifunctional organic nitrates - deadline: ASAP

Scientific context:
Organic Nitrates (ONs) are formed in NOx rich air (typically urban areas) by the degradation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Due to their rather long lifetimes, they can act as reservoirs for reactive nitrogen by undergoing long‐range transport in the free troposphere before decomposing and releasing NOx in remote regions. They, therefore, play a key role in the distribution of reactive Nitrogen species and consequently in the formation of ozone and other secondary pollutants and their distribution at the regional and global scales. Among the ONs, a variety of multifunctional species such as hydroxy‐nitrats, carbonyl‐nitrates and dinitrates is formed and significantly contributes to the reactive Nitrogen budget in both rural and urban areas. These multifunctional ONs are low‐volatile and highly soluble and are thus capable of strongly partitioning to the atmospheric condensed phases (droplets, aerosols). Recent field observations have shown that organic nitrates are important components of total OA. However, there is a strong lack of experimental data on the reactivity of these species in both gas and condensed phases, in particular for multifunctional compounds.
In the framework of European project EUROCHAMP‐2020, LISA laboratory is involved in the study of the gas‐phase reactivity of ONs in order to improve the carbon balance during simulation chambers experiments (WP10).

Mission
The successful candidate will study the gas‐phase reactivity of multifunctional organic nitrates in simulation chambers. A selection of multifunctional ONs which will be preliminarily synthesized with the help of an organic chemist will be studied. Experiments will be carried out in the CESAM platform which includes two simulation chambers (https://www.eurochamp.org/Facilities/SimulationChambers/CESAM.aspx).
The candidate will also contribute to EUROCHAMP‐2020 project through participation to the “multi‐chamber experiments”. This task aims at carrying out “reference” experiments in various chambers in order to improve the comparability and the interoperability of the chamber studies.

Candidate profile
A PhD in atmospheric sciences is required. Good knowledge in atmospheric chemistry, kinetics and analytical techniques (mass spectrometry, FTIR) is appreciated. Candidates must have a good capability to communicate (oral and written) in English and a knowledge of French would also be appreciated.

Application
Please send by email to the contact a detailed CV, a letter of application with research interests and the name of two referees.

PhD position on atmospheric chemistry at CNRS (Orléans, France) - deadline 15/11/18

CNRS-ICARE develops research activities in the areas of combustion chemistry and physics, plasmas for propulsion and atmospheric chemistry and environment. The research activities of the Atmospheric Reactivity group (ARg) involved in this thesis subject mainly deals with laboratory and field studies of gas phase and heterogeneous chemical processes relevant for the troposphere.
The thesis will depend on the ED EMSTU (Ecole Doctorale Energie - Matériaux - Sciences de la Terre et de l'Univers), which brings together all the scientific activities of the field of materials and energy in the broad sense that are developed in the region Centre Val de Loire.

Local and regional air pollution by ozone and other photooxidants is a major issue for human health and environment. Urban areas are essentially concerned by anthropogenic Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) whose degradation in the presence of NO and NO2 generates this type of atmospheric pollution. In rural areas, biogenic VOCs are the main organic drivers and their chemical structure often bearing one or more unsaturated bonds makes them highly reactive towards ozone. Because of the present climate change and the increasing stress phenomena on plants, biogenic VOCs emissions are expected to increase in the next years. BVOC ozonolysis leads to the formation of new stable compounds, radicals and secondary organic aerosols (SOA). The detailed characterization of these products will allow evaluating the importance of these physico-chemical processes and their impacts on air quality and climate.
The proposed study thus involves rate constant measurements of a series of BVOCs and chemical mechanism development. The atmospheric oxydation chemistry will be investigated in environmental simulation chambers (ESC). Such facilities enable reproducing atmospheric conditions in which VOCs can be oxidized under low to high simulated polluted conditions. Product and SOA precursor kinetics will be determined using state-of-the-art analytical instrumentation connected to the chambers. It is planned to use two complementary ESC, one at ICARE (Orléans), the other at IMT (Douai).

Requirements:
The candidate must have a Master degree or equivalent, clearly showing an initiation to research (through a master's degree or a long-term internship in private or academic research).
He/she must not have already started a thesis and can not apply for another offer of ED EMSTU (552)
The profile of the candidate must be consistent with the description of the thesis subject. The post requires a high level of communication skills, both oral and written (French or English required) to be able to present at conferences and write articles in scientific publications.
We are looking for a PhD fellow who will be able to become fully involved with the project, with a thirst for knowledge, a certain independence of thought and strong motivation to develop skills in the field of atmospheric chemistry. In addition, the candidate must be able to work in a team on multi-disciplinary projects.
Applications must include a detailed CV and grades for the Masters 1 or 2 or the engineering degree.
The closing date for sending applications is 15/11/2018!

Role Description
ESR 3:
Applications are invited from highly-motivated individuals wishing to carry out a PhD thesis on atmospheric research conducted at the CLOUD facility at CERN, with special focus on ion processes and their effects on aerosols and clouds. The successful applicant will be supervised by Prof. Jasper Kirkby at CERN. You will be based at CERN, Geneva, and enrolled as a PhD student at Goethe University Frankfurt.
You will focus on ion processes and their effects on aerosols and clouds. This will involve understanding ion production in the CLOUD chamber from galactic cosmic rays and the pion beam, ion non-uniformities due to imperfect mixing, and ion loss mechanisms, using data obtained with the Neutral and Air Ion Spectrometer (NAIS) and Cluster Ion Counter (CIC). The effect of ions on aerosol particle nucleation and growth will be investigated. You will also develop a charged cloud condensation nucleus (CCN) generator for a variety of monodisperse aerosol. The design will be based on electrospray generation and allow adjustment of CCN charge polarity and magnitude. You will use this novel CCN source at CLOUD to investigate the effect of charge on CCN activation threshold, intra-cloud aerosol scavenging and ice nucleation. You will also take on management responsibilities for coordinating the CLOUD-MOTION ESRs and their analysing instruments during measurement campaigns at CERN. You will be fully integrated within the overall CLOUD research programme, and be a co-author or lead author on CLOUD publications. In addition to close involvement with the CLOUD experimental facility at CERN, you will have the opportunity for secondments to partner institutes.

PostDoc in atmospheric chemistry with application in chemical ionisation mass spectromtery at the the University of Gothenburg - Deadline: 30/06/2018

Our atmospheric science constellation is unique in Sweden in that it takes a molecular approach to transport and reaction processes in the atmosphere. A unifying focus is the study of aerosols, with activities ranging from fundamental studies of chemical reactions on the molecular level, to applied work including field studies of atmospheric processes, their importance to current climate and air quality research. The research contributes to developments in the fields of colloidal chemistry, nanotechnology, medicine as well as development of traffic related chemistry and sustainable development in developing countries.

Subject area description

The aim of this project is to quantify, understand and provide tools to describe atmospheric oxidation of organic compounds. This oxidation is important to understand formation of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) but also the generally production of oxygenated compounds that can effect air quality both in outdoor and indoor environments. Aerosol particles are crucial components in any evaluation process regarding air quality and climate change. SOA represents a significant fraction of the tropospheric aerosol. Still, the current level of understanding of SOA processes is remarkably low compared to other processes in aerosol science, i.e. modelled SOA based on experimental findings and existing theory does not capture the variability of observed SOA loadings and often predicts far less SOA than observed. It has been indicated that biogenic SOA can be largely affected by anthropogenic pollutants, i.e. NO2, SO2 or organic compounds e.g. aromatics and aldehydes. The effect of anthropogenic pollutants may explain part of the discrepancy between models and field observations. Specifically, this project applies high resolution mass spectroscopy techniques for detailed analysis of gas and particle phase to elucidate chemical mechanisms of importance for atmospheric SOA. A specific aim is how to link SOA mechanisms to model developments for descriptions in air quality and climate models. The experiments will primarily be conducted using our high-resolution time-of-flight chemical-ionization mass spectrometer (http://www.atmos-meas-tech.net/7/983/2014/amt-7-983-2014.html) in combination with inlets separating particle and gas phase for characterization of organic compositions.

Postdoc opportunity at University of Colorado, Boulder with Professor Veronica Vaida

Postdoctoral opportunities exist to investigate the unique micro-environments provided by aqueous surfaces, interfaces and micro-droplets, and how they affect organic photochemical reactions. The proposed research includes three related approaches:

(1) fundamental laboratory experiments to probe multiphase, environmentally relevant systems using surface sensitive techniques,

(2) environmental chamber studies where conditions approximating the atmosphere can be created, allowing for the assessment of the importance of interfacial chemical reactions in comparison to the better-studied bulk reactions in gas and aqueous phases, and

(3) investigation of reactions confined in micro-droplets and vesicles, which will be compared with their bulk and surface counterparts.

This research has significant implications for planetary chemical processes, including on both the contemporary and prebiotic Earth. (1) The Earth’s ocean-atmosphere system, a sunlight-driven photochemical reactor, is a large and complex system, but has been altered over its existence through both natural and anthropogenic events. While gas phase chemistry has received the most attention, in this global reactor, chemistry occurs in all phases. In fact, it has long been established that heterogeneous and multiphase reactions can be extremely important for a fundamental understanding of environmental chemical reactions, which affect chemical processing, air quality, and ultimately visibility, human health, and the planet’s temperature. (2) More broadly, radiation from a planet’s host star provides energy capable of driving planetary processes, including those that increase a system’s chemical complexity.

Starlight initiated reactions generate high-energy molecules that are precursors to metabolism as it has evolved in life on Earth. Experiments are designed to investigate the photochemical synthesis and reactivity of such model organic systems under conditions representative of exoplanet Earth analogues, as well as the effect of water on reactivity. Based on this photochemistry, potential spectroscopic probes will be designed for the identification of high energy species and consequently of potentially habitable environments.

To apply, please send a letter of interest, a full CV, and contact information for two references (one of which is the graduate advisor) to Professor Veronica Vaida, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, University of Colorado, Boulder, CO, 80309-0215 or email to Vaida@colorado.edu

Postdoctoral fellow in Atmospheric chemistry at the University of Gothenburg Deadline: 31st of May 2017

Research group : Atmospheric science, Professor Mattias Hallquist (hallq@chem.gu.se), University of Gothenburg

Specific subject description : The aim of this project is to quantify, understand and provide tools to describe atmospheric oxidation of organic compounds.

The experiments will primarily be conducted using our high-resolution time-of-flight chemical-ionization mass spectrometer in combination with inlets separating particle and gas phase for characterization of organic compositions. (FIGAERO-CIMS)

Job assignments : Research in atmospheric chemistry using high resolution mass spectrometry with chemical ionization. The experimental studies can be carried out both in our laboratory but also in the field to study the emissions and secondary transformation of organic compounds in both indoor and outdoor environments. In addition to work in Sweden one is expected to participate in our international collaboration projects, currently with emphasis on India, China, Germany and the UK. The work involves a great deal of analysis and evaluation of measurement data for the understanding and quantification of atmospheric oxidation of organic substances.

Eligibility : The qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance.

To qualify as a postdoctoral fellow, the applicant must have completed a doctoral degree corresponding to a Swedish doctoral degree.
Preference will be given to candidates who have been awarded the degree no more than three years before the application deadline Applicants with a degree obtained earlier than the stipulated three years may be preferred if special reasons exists. Special reasons in this context include, but are not limited to, leave due to illness and parental leave.

A requirement is experience in mass spectroscopy with atmospheric application demonstrated by international publications in peer-reviewed journals and experimental work.
Preferences will be given to candidates that have experience in working with a high-resolution time-of-flight chemical-ionization mass spectrometer (HRToF-CIMS), where also previous experience on air quality studies in Beijing or Hong Kong are beneficial.

Assessment : Regulations for the evaluation of qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance.

Experience in working with a high-resolution time-of-flight chemical-ionization mass spectrometer (HRToF-CIMS) with applications on atmospheric chemistry. Previous experience on air quality studies in Beijing or Hong Kong.

The research group : Our atmospheric science constellation is unique in Sweden in that it takes a molecular approach to transport and reaction processes in the atmosphere.

Applications are invited for a 36 month Postdoctoral Research Fellow post in Birmingham, to participate in field measurement campaigns in Delhi, and to carry out offline physical and chemical analyses of airborne particles collected using a number of analytical approaches such as Nanoscale Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometer, Transmission Electron Microscope and Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometer. The offline data will be integrated with other online and semi-online analyses (e.g., size distribution, metal, isotope and Aerosol Mass Spectrometer data) to understand the sources of PM2.5 and the formation mechanisms of haze particles under different atmospheric conditions (e.g., winter vs. summer, fog vs. non-fog).

Delhi is one of the world’s most polluted cities, with millions of inhabitants experiencing air pollution which substantially exceeds national and international standards.  Research to identify sources and process responsible for poor air quality in Delhi is urgently needed, to support the development of efficient policies reduce pollution levels and improve human and environmental health.

The UK Natural Environment Research Council, in collaboration with Indian funders, have developed the research programme “Atmospheric Pollution and Human Health in an Indian Megacity (APHH-India)” with a view to generating both a better understanding of the air pollution phenomena in Delhi and surrounding areas and the options for mitigation. The University of Birmingham leads the “An Integrated Study of Air Pollutant Sources in the Delhi National Capital Region (NCR): ASAP-Delhi” project within this programme; ASAP-Delhi will support a range of measurement and modelling activities conducted by the Universities of Birmingham and Surrey in the UK, and by the Indian Institute of Technology (Delhi) and National Physical Laboratory in Delhi.

The applicant will join the air pollution / atmospheric chemistry research group at the University of Birmingham, with field, laboratory and model activity ranging from source and emissions measurements to model and experimental studies of vegetation - climate interaction. They will have the opportunity to interact with the wider group, and to contribute to PhD and Masters student supervision  For more information click here: http://www.birmingham.ac.uk/research/activity/environmental-health/index.aspx
